ALPHA OMEGA ARTS
By Ernest Disney-Britton
HOLLYWOOD---While it didn't smash any box-office records, “Elysium” was No. 1 at North American theaters this weekend and a supporting character of a Catholic Nun was my favorite person in the film. The $110 million film dominated by themes of illegal immigration and healthcare disparities took in an estimated $30.5 million over the weekend. Another dominant theme in this world 150 years into the future was in pitting the poor people-of-color against the rich white people; but still a message of faith shines throughout. The nun, complete with veil and habit, becomes the concience for the oppressed, gently extolling principles of faith and inspiring a orphan boy to grow-up to become a savior---and make the ultimate sacrifice. Even in all it's horror of future life, there is beauty in "Elysium". (A&O Rating: ★★★)
